CIPA Compliance
What is CIPA?
School boards across the state of Texas have adopted policies in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Jefferson ISD also adopted such a policy in order to protect the students and staff and implemented safety measures when using the Internet. Therefore, we will follow the guidelines as outlined in CIPA.
The basic rules of CIPA include, but are not limited to:
-
The district is required to provide a filtering system to block any pictures, graphic images, or other visual depictions that might be “harmful to minors.”
-
The district will provide Internet Safety Education to each staff member and student. (The delivery method will vary at each campus depending on the age of the student.)
-
The district will continue to monitor Internet usage.
How Does That Apply to Teachers?
Here’s what that means for you:
-
As a staff member you must monitor students at all times when using computers or wireless devices.
-
Students can NOT be allowed to use the computers without a teacher or staff member that is able to actively monitor their students.
-
We must educate all students on Internet Safety and ensure that they are following the guidelines we set for them.
-
We agree to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and ensure that children under the age of 13 are not providing personal information online. This includes posting their pictures and information online. Please check with your office to see which students have signed permission allowing their pictures and name to be published before adding them to the website, etc.
-
Cell phones MUST be put away unless they are being used for educational purposes. This has to be monitored! That means if students have their phones or personal devices out, the teacher should be moving about the room to ensure that students are following through with the activity that you have assigned for them.
-
We must perform due diligence at all times. This means that a misbehavior should be corrected in a reasonable amount of time and if it continues, then disciplinary action should be taken.
